KOINONIA

Facilitating Relationship with God through Personal Prayer, Meditation, and Community

WELCOME to KOINONIA

KOINONIA is a Greek word meaning fellowship, communion, or sharing in common, and in a Christian context, it refers to a deep, intimate bond between believers and with Jesus Christ. It involves more than just surface-level association; it encompasses active participation in each other's lives, spiritual and interpersonal sharing, and a shared sense of longing for God on a soul level.

Here, we discover opening ourselves to the LIVING PRESENCE OF CHRIST—fully human, fully divine—who dwells among us and within us. In Him, heaven touches earth. Through Him, our ordinary humanity is lifted, healed, and made radiant with his love.

God became one with us—so that we might become one with Him.
That in receiving Christ—in the Eucharist, in prayer, in the silence of the heart—we are drawn into communion with the LOVE of GOD, forming an intimate relationship where authentic transformation can take place

Whether you are seeking rest, renewal, or a deeper intimacy with God, know that you are welcome here. This space is consecrated to the slow and beautiful work of GRACE—to the journey of being formed by LOVE, into LOVE.

We need to actively engage in our relationship with God by spending dedicated time with Him in conversation that includes listening to God, surrendering to His will, and opening our hearts to Jesus' love directly from Him and through others. As God-seeking humans, we do that in various ways, depending upon our faith, beliefs, and sacred journey.

An interior life, consisting of prayer, meditation, and contemplation in its various forms, is universal in its ability to draw us closer to and to experience God directly so that His grace might stimulate our growth as loving virtuous humans. When we exercise free will to take such action, it exposes our true purpose in life: to become Love itself as God intended and as Jesus modeled for us.

Everything else in our lives then flows and evolves from that: our physical, mental, and emotional well-being; our relationships and love for self and others; our passions; our creativity, all of which ignites and sends forth the light that we are meant to be in the world.

INTENTIONS OF KOINONIA

In accordance with God's will, to support you in your own unique personal relationship with God by nourishing an experiential interior life of prayer, meditation, and contemplation that supports your sacramental and liturgical life and coexists with and enhances your worldly existence of family, friends, work, and creativity bringing together a community of contemporary souls who are like-minded in their desire to openly be loved by God and others, to embody Christ, and to engage in the sanctification of our souls.

WHAT IT IS AND FOR WHOM

KOINONIA is a "heart-centered apostolate of Christian Spirituality" that emerged out of my years of meditative spiritual practices and eventual conversion to Catholicism when I was called to the interior life teachings of Carmelite Spirituality. There I discovered the wisdom writings of the church fathers and saints and contemporary heart-centered religious and lay Catholic writers, thinkers, and practitioners. This apostolate intends to align with the authentic teachings of the Catholic church through traditional and contemporary teachings, its sacraments, sacred scripture, prayer, and guides you in exploring inner, prayer practices that will help you experience the unceasing "living presence" of Christ in the Eucharist and in your life.

What is an apostolate?

An apostolate is

"every activity of the Mystical Body that aims to spread the Kingdom of God” (CCC 864). It's secular in nature vs. the ordained, religious community in that it flows from baptism and confirmation and is proper and peculiar to the laity contributing to the sanctification of the world.  (Lumen Gentium, §31).

Anyone who longs to develop a relationship with God, to experience His Love, and to grow spiritually into their unique selves while following God's plan for them is welcomed here. If all that has no meaning for you are still welcome In addition to the practicing and non-practicing lay Catholic community and Catholic religious, I welcome all Christians of all denominations and curious non-Christians, non-believers, and those who are "spiritual, but not religious" to come together to explore how we can relate to God and each other through His Grace, Wisdom, and Peace.

EDUCATION, PRACTICE, AND COMMUNITY

Koinonia offers introductory classes in Christian Prayer and Meditation that encompass how to pray vocally and through inner dialog and surrender to God; scripture reading; reflection, imagination, and contemplation. You can participate in weekly and monthly prayer groups online and in-person. The intention is foremost to help you open and engage your heart experientially while providing enough information and guidance to satisfy your curiosity and understanding of Christ's holiness and our journey towards holiness.

There are or will be programs on sacred scripture, book/media studies, retreats and special events to support your interior life. The introductory scripture program is the St. Paul Center's video/book study Genesis to Jesus - the Story of Salvation produced by Scott Hahn and Matthew Leonard. Doing this study was a life changing event for me bringing into focus God's plan for the salvation of humanity, our failures, God's mercy, and Jesus's and Mary's roles in our salvation yesterday and today. Other offerings will evolve over time.

You will find more detailed descriptions, schedule, and class registration options by clicking Book Online here or in the menu at the top of the page. Class and group offerings are hosted live via Zoom or in-person in Petaluma, CA. The link/address will be sent to you automatically once you register.

A free membership in KOINONIA will add your name to the email list and gives you access to basic offerings without charge. Eventually, a paid membership will open the way to more offerings and discounts on special events, programs.

We have to learn to pray as if we were learning this art ever anew from the lips of the Divine Master himself, like the first disciples: 'Lord, teach us to pray!' (Lk 11:1)
